Class descriptions

The Aftertouch Ballgame

What is Aftertouch? Why is it important? What regulation points influence it? How is it set on an upright and a grand? Come unravel these regulation mysteries as we work through the Aftertouch process! The piano is trying to tell you something. Are you listening?

The Repetition Race Car

Checking and spring tension are perhaps the most misunderstood regulation points. Add to this the implications of pinning friction and things really get complicated. To unravel these mysteries, we will need to watch slow-motion footage and measure spring strength in an entirely new way. Can you make a grand piano play like a race car?

The Escapement Escape Room

Properly setting drop in a grand piano is like entering an escape room. In order to escape, you must solve one puzzle and three padlocks. Come learn what these components of simultaneous escapement are and how to set them with precision. Can you escape?

Voicing: Behind-The-Scenes

What exactly happens to the tone of a note when it is voiced? In this class, before and after recordings will be played so that you can hear the difference. But that is not all! Graphs will also be displayed, making it easy to see which partials are affected by different voicing techniques. Bring your listening ears!
